Let’s talk about symptoms of menopause

Pain during intercourse - what causes it?

Pain during intercourse can be due to vaginal dryness, thinning of the vaginal tissues and reduced lubrication during sexual activity. Painful intercourse can lead to avoidance of sex and less satisfying sex as well as a loss of sexual desire.

Vaginal dryness can have a significant effect on intimacy in a couple.
According to an international survey of over 4,000 postmenopausal women and their partners,

  • About 2/3 avoided intimacy due to vaginal discomfort
  • More than half reported having less sex
  • Almost a quarter reported having no sex at all

Painful sex was reason for avoiding sex in over half of women and men in the survey.
